Chloramine vs Chlorine: Which Does Your Australian City Use?

Two disinfectants, one job

Every Australian water utility adds a disinfectant to keep tap water safe as it travels from the treatment plant to your tap. Almost all of them use one of two: free chlorine, or chloramine.

Free chlorine is the traditional choice. It works quickly, and it has a shorter life in the pipe network, so it is topped up to hold a residual all the way to the tap. Because it is volatile, it dissipates on its own if you leave a glass of water out, and a standard carbon filter reduces it readily.

Chloramine is formed by combining chlorine with a small amount of ammonia. It is more stable, so it holds its disinfecting residual across long pipe runs, which is why large or spread-out distribution networks favour it. That same stability is the catch: chloramine does not evaporate off, and it is significantly harder to reduce with a basic carbon filter, particularly at the fast flow and warm temperature of a shower.

Why the difference matters in the shower

A shower is a demanding place to filter water. The temperature is high, the flow is fast, and the water is in contact with the filter media for barely a second. Free chlorine copes well with these conditions - it is reactive and a carbon-based filter reduces it effectively even at speed.

Chloramine is the harder problem. It is less reactive and more stable, so at shower flow a filter reduces it far less completely than it reduces free chlorine. This is the single reason two people can buy the same shower filter and have very different experiences: the one in a free-chlorine city gets what they expected, while the one in a chloramine city may notice little change, because the filter was built for the easier chemical.

The practical takeaway: if your supply is chloramine, a filter that only targets free chlorine will underperform. You want media chosen to reduce chlorine and help reduce chloramine, so it works whichever chemical reaches your tap.

2. Test at home (quick indication)

An inexpensive DPD test kit from a hardware store measures chlorine. If you want a rough check: fill a glass and leave it uncovered in the fridge for a few hours, then smell and taste it. Free chlorine largely dissipates in that time; if a chemical note is still clearly there, chloramine is the more likely disinfectant.
